“The Great Lady Who Came to Look”
Her Story
Dowager consort of the princely house of Nan’an, and one of the great ladies who come to Grandmother Jia’s eightieth birthday in Chapter 71. She asks to see the girls of the family. Tanchun, Xiangyun, Baochai, Baoqin and Daiyu are brought out to her; she looks them over, praises them, and gives keepsakes. It is a social courtesy and it is also an appraisal. The Jia daughters are being seen, and by whom matters.
In Xiang Li's Hands
Phoenix crown, pearl strings, a dragon robe in gold and aubergine that takes up half the sheet — and in her hands a small red-covered book, her eyes down on it. Two guardian lions loom behind in grey outline. For the woman the novel sends to look at girls, she is looking at a page.
The Calligraphy
The inscription reads 南安王太妃 — house, princely rank and her standing as dowager, and no personal name at all, because the novel gives her none.
