甄应嘉
“The Rehearsal”
His Story
Head of the Zhen house at Nanjing, style-name 友忠, and the Jia family’s oldest friend among the southern nobility. His household mirrors theirs down to the son — Zhen Baoyu, another boy brought up among girls, who looks and talks like Jia Baoyu. In Chapter 75 word reaches the Jia house that the Zhens have been confiscated and their master summoned to the capital for judgement, and Zhen servants arrive with property to hide. Everything that happens to his family happens to the Jias afterwards.
In Xiang Li's Hands
He stands in mauve and dull red, white beard to his chest, against yellow and grey washes swirling like weather. In his raised hand, clear of his head, a black official’s hat. Whether it is coming off or going back on is left open — and his family’s story runs both ways.
The Calligraphy
甄应嘉 runs down the left edge, brushed in the full traditional form 甄應嘉, surname and given name without the style-name 友忠 and without office: the man, not the rank he is holding in his hand.
