His Story
Another of the hangers-on attached to Jia Zheng’s outer study. In Chapter 8 he and Zhan Guang intercept Baoyu with loud pleasure and a great deal of touching. His name carries the same trick as his colleagues’: 单聘仁 for 善骗人, good at cheating people, beside 詹光 for 沾光 and 卜固修 for 不顾羞, past shame. The novel gives these men no crimes. It just names them and lets the names do the work.
In Xiang Li's Hands
Two men on one sheet. The older stands in grey, scratching up under his cap, eyes narrowed; the younger sits on a rock in blue and mauve, moustached, one hand out toward a blank sheet of paper between them. Whatever is being drafted, neither looks to be doing it.
The Calligraphy
Inscribed 单聘仁·卜固修 — two names for two figures, the second man surviving here only in the calligraphy, both puns brushed straight and left without comment.
