The Jiaqing Emperor — Qing Renzong
嘉慶帝 · 清仁宗
简体 嘉庆帝 · 清仁宗
“Inherited an empty treasury and a rebellion he could not afford”
He waited three years for his retired father to actually stop governing, then executed Heshen within days and took his fortune — reportedly the equivalent of years of state revenue. It was not enough. The White Lotus rebellion took nine years and the rest of the money, and the opium trade began in earnest under him.
He is the hinge emperor: everything is still working, and nothing is working well.
No empress of his reign has been painted; the Qing empresses silk covers the dynasty as a whole.
