张二

“The Uncle at the Inquest”

His Story

Zhang San’s uncle, standing with the family when the body is examined and the case is heard. He is a relative and a witness and nothing more — the Zhang side needs somebody at the inquest, and he is who they have. When the Xue family’s money reaches the court and the killing is written down in Chapter 86 as an accident, he is one of the people in front of whom that reversal is carried out.

In Xiang Li's Hands

He kneels grinning, a small white lump held up to one eye, more of them laid out on a blue and red cloth at his knees. Ingots, by the look of them. Green robe, green cap, bare paper behind — the settlement, not the inquest.

The Calligraphy

張二, surname and birth order, “Zhang Two” — the same numbering as his nephew, and all the identity either of them is given.
