Wenhua

Wenhua 文花 — La voz en el festín de luna. Una cantante en el hogar de Jia Zhen en la casa Ningguo.

文花

“The Voice at the Moon Feast”

Her Story

A singing-girl in Jia Zhen’s household at the Ningguo house. She appears at the mid-autumn feast of Chapter 75, told to sing while Peifeng plays the flute. That is effectively all the novel gives her: a name among Jia Zhen’s women and one instruction to perform. She is in the room on the night the party hears a long sigh come from the other side of the garden wall, and she is not mentioned again.

In Xiang Li's Hands

She is painted dancing rather than singing: a large dark fan lifted above her shoulder, the other hand at her cheek, chin up, openly laughing. The robe is grey-black ink over teal. The whole ground behind her is a wall of peonies drawn in pale outline and left uncoloured.

The Calligraphy

文花, set low on the left rather than at the upper right where most of these sheets carry the name — a personal name only, of the kind given to a performer.
