His Story
A farmer in a village outside the capital, married to Grannie Liu’s daughter. His grandfather, wanting the backing of a great house, once had himself enrolled as kin to the Wang clan of the capital; the acquaintance has long since lapsed. In Chapter 6, with autumn ending and nothing laid in for the winter, he drinks and picks quarrels at home instead of doing anything about it. It is his mother-in-law who remembers the old connection, and who goes.
In Xiang Li's Hands
Long grey-mauve robe, heavy black boots planted wide, laughing. A bundle of patterned green and gold rides at his shoulder and a length of pink silk streams out behind him. Read one way, that is the poor relation walking home loaded from the great house.
The Calligraphy
狗儿 alone — no surname, only the dog-name given to a peasant child to keep the spirits from wanting him, and never outgrown.
