Her Story
In Chapter 46 Jia She decides he wants Yuanyang, Grandmother Jia’s maid, as a concubine. Yuanyang refuses him in front of the household and cuts off her hair to make the refusal permanent. Jia She, humiliated, buys a girl instead: seventeen years old, brought in from outside, named Yanhong, installed in his rooms. That is her whole appearance in the novel. She exists to close a chapter about a woman who said no, and she is given nothing to say herself.
In Xiang Li's Hands
Red on grey and nothing else. She stands with her back to us, both hands up in her hair, the face turned just far enough to show a closed eye and a mouth; behind her, broad grey leaves in dry sweeping strokes. Her name means crimson and the sheet is spent on it.

嫣红, upper left — the personal name alone, and a bought one, the two characters fixed to a seventeen-year-old on her way into the house.
