“Fled the capital as it burned, and died at thirty in exile”

The Taiping rebellion began in his first year and ran for the whole reign; the Second Opium War ended with British and French troops in Beijing and the Old Summer Palace burned to the ground. He left for the hunting lodge at Rehe in 1860 and never came back, dying there at thirty.

The regency arrangement he left was overthrown within weeks by his widow and his brother, and the Qing was governed by that widow for the next forty-seven years.

Empress Xiaodexian died before he took the throne. The consort who bore his only son was Cixi.
