The Tongzhi Emperor — Qing Muzong

“Ruled for two years, at the end of a reign named after him”

Five at his accession, and governed by two dowagers from behind a screen for the whole of his minority. The Tongzhi Restoration — the suppression of the Taiping, the first arsenals and shipyards, the first foreign-language school — was the work of his officials. He took power at seventeen and died of smallpox at nineteen.

His widow, pregnant or not depending on which account you read, died within seventy days of him.

That was Empress Xiaozheyi, whose silk is in the collection.
