宣統帝
简体 宣统帝
“Emperor at two, abdicated at six, and a gardener in Beijing at sixty”
The last emperor of China. He abdicated in February 1912, lived on in the Forbidden City until 1924, was installed by Japan as ruler of Manchukuo, captured by the Soviets, handed to the People's Republic, imprisoned for a decade and released in 1959 as a citizen. He worked in the Beijing botanical gardens and died in 1967.
Two thousand one hundred and thirty-two years of empire end with him, and the collection ends with his wife.
Empress Wanrong, married to him at seventeen, became addicted to opium in Manchukuo and died in a prison cell in Jilin in 1946. Her body was never found.
