清朝皇后

the last dynasty · three paintings

It begins with a marriage alliance between a small northeastern confederation and the Mongol cavalry it could not conquer China without, and it ends on 12 February 1912 with a woman signing an abdication that closed two thousand one hundred and thirty-two years of imperial government.

In between: the longest reign in Chinese history, the most powerful monarch in the world in his lifetime, two Opium Wars, a civil war that killed perhaps twenty million people, the burning of the Summer Palace, and forty-seven years of rule by a woman who had entered the palace as a fifth-rank concubine.

The Group Painting

Ten anchored sections, from the Mongol noblewomen who founded the dynasty to the empress who died in a prison cell in 1946.
