“Reformed for a hundred days, and was a prisoner for the next ten years”

Chosen at three because he was Cixi's nephew and could be controlled. In 1898, after the defeat by Japan, he launched the Hundred Days' Reform — schools, a modern army, a constitution. Cixi ended it in September, executed six of the reformers and confined him to an island in the palace lake until he died, one day before her.

Tests on his remains in 2008 found arsenic at some two thousand times the normal level. The question of who ordered it is no longer really open.

Empress Longyu, Cixi's niece, was married to him against his wishes; she signed the abdication of the Qing in 1912.
