“Stopped attending court for twenty-five years”
The longest Ming reign. Its first decade, under the chancellor Zhang Juzheng, was a genuine fiscal reform; after Zhang died and was posthumously disgraced, the emperor withdrew. Denied the heir he wanted, he refused to see his ministers, left posts unfilled and memorials unanswered for a quarter of a century, while the Three Great Campaigns and a war in Korea drained the treasury.
Historians generally date the fall of the Ming to this reign rather than to 1644.
Empress Xiaoduanxian held the rank for forty-two years, longer than any other empress in Chinese history, and had no influence at all.
