“Twenty-nine days, and a red pill”
He waited thirty-eight years to be recognized as heir and reigned for a month. He fell ill, took a red pill offered by a minor official, felt better, took a second, and was dead by morning. The Case of the Red Pills is one of the three great unsolved court mysteries of the late Ming.
The factional fighting over what had happened consumed the next reign entirely.
His first wife, Empress Xiaoyuanzhen, died in 1613, before any of it.
