“Half of a Matched Pair”
His Story
One half of a pair whose names are cut from the same cloth — 双瑞, “twin auspices,” and 双寿, “twin longevity.” In Chapter 28 he is one of the four boys Baoyu takes with him to Feng Ziying’s banquet, riding out with Mingyan, Chuyao and Shuangshou: the afternoon of the drinking game, Jiang Yuhan and the crimson sash. That is his appearance in the novel — a name on the list of who went along.
In Xiang Li's Hands
She paints a small child, not a servant on duty: double buns tied with green ribbon, a squashed comic face, freckles, eyes screwed shut, a brocade case of scroll-tubes clamped under one arm. The grey-and-turquoise robe pools far past his feet. Nothing behind him at all.
