“Fifth on the List”
His Story
One of the six men who make up Baoyu’s escort to the clan school in Chapter 9, named in the same sentence as Wang Rong, Zhang Ruojin and Zhao Yihua, behind Li Gui at their head. He has no line, no errand and no reappearance. The list exists to give the scale of the household, and Qian Qi is one of its units.
In Xiang Li's Hands
She paints him from behind: pale blue robe, soft cap, face turned up in profile, the body broken open by wet black ink. A ribbed red lantern hangs in at the top right, and a second expanse of robe runs off the sheet, its wearer out of frame. The escort is painted, the escorted cropped away.
The Calligraphy
钱启 at the left, surname and given name together — the fuller address the grown escort men receive, above a date and signature the pages’ sheets rarely carry.
