晉孝武帝
简体 晋孝武帝
“Won the Fei River, and was smothered by a consort he had insulted”
The one Eastern Jin emperor to hold real power, largely because the Fei River victory of 383 destroyed the northern threat and the general who might have replaced him. He drank heavily; in 396, after joking to a favorite consort that she was too old at thirty, he was smothered in his sleep that night.
Nobody was punished for it. The court simply announced a death and moved on to his son, who was severely disabled, and the dynasty's last quarter-century belonged to its generals.
His empress was Wang Fahui, of the great Wang clan, who died at twenty and was honored as Empress Xiaowuding.
