晉成帝

简体 晋成帝

“Emperor at four, and a hostage in his own palace at six”

His uncle's mishandling of a frontier general produced the Su Jun rebellion of 327; the rebels took Jiankang, and the child emperor was held in his own capital while it burned. He grew up under the regency of the great families and died at twenty-one.

The rebellion was put down by provincial armies, which taught the southern court a lesson it never unlearned: the men who saved it could equally have taken it.

His empress was Du Lingyang, who died at twenty and was posthumously honored as Empress Chengong.
