“An orphan raised by a warlord, who took the richest kingdom in the south”
Born Xu Zhigao, orphaned in the wars and adopted by the ruler of Wu, he took that state in 937, renamed it Tang and claimed descent from the imperial house. The Southern Tang he founded was the wealthiest and most cultivated of the Ten Kingdoms.
He kept out of wars, cut taxes and encouraged the refugee scholars flooding south — the conditions that produced the painting and poetry the kingdom is remembered for.
His second wife was Song Fujin, Empress Yuanjing. Her page in this collection is filed under the Jin dynasty by an old error in the source data; she belongs here.
