A Shatuo general who declared himself emperor when the Khitan sacked Kaifeng, took the capital as they withdrew, and died within the year. The Later Han lasted four years in total — the shortest of all the dynasties counted in the standard list.
Its brevity is the point: by the 940s the throne belonged to whichever army commander held the capital in a given season.
Empress Li was a farmer's daughter taken from her father's house at night by the soldier who became emperor, and she is the one who told him, when he wanted to loot the city to pay his troops, to use the palace treasury instead.
