“Captured by the Mongols, ransomed, imprisoned by his brother, and restored”
Persuaded by the eunuch Wang Zhen to lead an army into Mongolia in 1449, he was captured at Tumu with half the Ming officer corps dead around him. His brother took the throne; when the Mongols returned him he spent seven years under house arrest, then seized the throne back in a palace coup.
He is the only Ming emperor to reign twice, and his one lasting act of decency was to abolish the practice of burying an emperor's consorts alive with him.
Empress Qian went blind and lame from weeping and kneeling during his captivity, according to the histories, and he ordered that she be buried beside him.
