He took the throne from his nephew by civil war and then ran the most expansive reign of the dynasty: the capital moved north, the Forbidden City built, the Grand Canal restored, the Yongle Encyclopedia compiled, five personal campaigns into Mongolia, and Zheng He's treasure fleets sent as far as East Africa.
It is the outward-facing moment of the Ming, and it did not survive him by long — the voyages were stopped, and the ships were left to rot.
Empress Xu was the daughter of the founder's greatest general, defended Beijing herself during the civil war, and wrote instructional books for women that stayed in print for centuries.
