“Drank while Xiangyang was under siege for five years”
The chancellor Jia Sidao kept the news of the Mongol siege of Xiangyang from him for years, and he did not look for it. When the fortress fell in 1273 the Yangtze was open; he died the following year, leaving a four-year-old on the throne with the invasion under way.
Xiangyang is the hinge of the whole Song–Mongol war, and it was lost while the court was being told everything was fine.
His empress Quan lived through the surrender, was taken to the north, and became a Buddhist nun in Dadu.
