宋末帝

“Carried into the sea at seven by the minister holding him”

After the fleet was destroyed at Yamen in 1279, the chancellor Lu Xiufu put the imperial seal on his own back, took the seven-year-old emperor in his arms and walked into the water. Contemporary accounts say tens of thousands followed them. Three centuries of Song ended that afternoon.

It is the most-remembered ending of any Chinese dynasty, and the reason Yamen is a place name with weight in Chinese.

The Southern Song empresses share one silk, which closes with these last reigns.
