晋元帝

Refounded the dynasty south of the Yangtze at Jiankang — modern Nanjing — on the strength of the Wang family's backing, and never escaped it. The saying of his own time gave the Wangs an equal share of the state, and his one attempt to take it back failed when Wang Dun marched on the capital.

The Eastern Jin he created was the model for every southern dynasty after it: a northern aristocracy in exile, a court with no army of its own, and great families holding the provinces.
