““Why do they not eat meat porridge?””
Developmentally disabled, and used as an instrument by everyone around him for seventeen years. His wife Jia Nanfeng governed by killing, the princes went to war over the regency, and the emperor was carried from camp to camp while the War of the Eight Princes destroyed the north.
Told that his people were starving for want of grain, he is supposed to have asked why they did not eat meat porridge instead — the Chinese equivalent of let them eat cake, and probably as unfair.
Empress Jia's downfall in 300 opened the war outright. She appears on the Western Jin silk with the three other empresses of the two reigns.
