He took the elixirs the age believed in — cinnabar and its compounds — stopped attending court, and was dead within four years. Chu Suanzi was recalled to the regency, and Huan Wen went on gathering the provinces.
Mineral poisoning killed a striking number of the period's aristocrats, several emperors among them.
His empress, Wang Muzhi, died the same year he did and was honored as Empress Aijing.
