“Avenged his father, and made the court a place people were afraid of”
He came to the throne by putting down his brother's parricide and spent eleven years centralising: provincial commands cut down, the imperial clan watched, taxes raised for building. The histories written afterwards accuse him of almost every private vice available, which is what the histories do to a ruler the aristocracy disliked.
Administratively the reign works; politically it leaves an heir nobody could control.
His empress was Wang Xianyuan, honored as Empress Wenmu, and the mother of the son who wrecked what was left.
