“One of the great painters in Chinese history, and the emperor who lost the north”
A superb artist and calligrapher — his Slender Gold script is still used — who ran the state as an aesthetic project: an imperial painting academy, an obsessive garden built from stone hauled across the empire, and an alliance with the Jurchen against the Liao that destroyed the buffer between the Song and a far more dangerous neighbour.
He abdicated in panic in 1125. The Jurchen took Kaifeng in 1127 and carried him, his son, and some three thousand of the court north; he died in captivity in Manchuria eight years later.
His empresses Wang and Zheng share a silk; Zheng died on the journey north.
