Northern Song · 960 – 1127

Emperor Taizong of Song

宋太宗

“Finished the reunification, and lost the north twice trying to complete it”

He succeeded his brother under a shadow that has never quite lifted, completed the conquest of the south, and then attacked the Liao twice to recover the Sixteen Prefectures. Both campaigns were destroyed. After 986 the Song stopped trying to take the north and started paying for peace.

At home he doubled the examination intake and put civil servants into every post that mattered — the shape of Chinese government for the next nine hundred years.

Empress Li of his reign is on the Early Northern Song silk with the empresses of five other emperors.
