Join artist Xiang Li 李湘 and Fei Wu at the Thomas Crane Public Library in Quincy for a full day of Chinese art, storytelling, and hands-on making in celebration of AAPI Heritage Month.
A pop-up exhibition of Xiang Li’s Chinese Empresses Collection will be on view in the Atrium from 11 AM to 4 PM, with original silk paintings displayed in the Community Meeting Room. Two free programs run alongside the exhibition — a family storytime and craft in the morning, and an artist talk and Q&A in the afternoon.

Canvas prints from the Chinese Empresses Collection line the Atrium, and original silk paintings are on view in the Community Meeting Room. Drop in any time during the day — no registration needed.
Storytime & Craft (All Ages) | 11 AM – 12 PM | Community Meeting Room
We begin with a playful panda welcome, introduce one or two memorable young-empress stories along with the imperial symbols children love to spot — phoenixes, dragons, flowers, clothing, and colors — and finish with a hands-on coloring and drawing activity. Large visual references and canvases will be on hand so children can look closely at the characters, clothing, animals, and symbols as the stories unfold. The program is presented in English, with Mandarin words and phrases woven in by Xiang and Fei helping to narrate and translate.
Artist Talk and Q&A (Adults 18+) | 2 – 3:30 PM | Community Meeting Room
Xiang Li shares her 37-year career as an artist at the Forbidden City in Beijing, introduces traditional Chinese silk painting and its materials and techniques, and walks through highlights from her Chinese Empresses Collection and other series, followed by an audience Q&A. Books and selected artworks will be available to view up close. Fei Wu will help present, interpret, and facilitate the program in English and Mandarin.
