His Story
You Erjie was betrothed to him in childhood. His family sank into poverty, and when Jia Lian takes her as a secret second wife the You side pays Zhang Hua off and the contract is cancelled. In Chapter 68 Wang Xifeng, wanting a weapon against that marriage, has him found again and put up to suing at the Censorate — the Jia household is dragged into court on a charge she arranged and paid for. Afterwards she wants him disposed of. He leaves the capital and drops out of the book.
In Xiang Li's Hands
Grey on grey. He kneels with his head bowed, face shadowed under a green cap, and holds a small celadon ewer up and away from himself, tipped, dripping. Whatever it held is running out onto the paper. No bride, no court, no contract — a man pouring something away.
The Calligraphy
張華 in full, surname and given name, the formal form a plaintiff’s name takes on a writ, which is the only capacity the novel uses him in.
