Her Story
Daughter of Wang Gou’er, granddaughter of Grannie Liu, sister to Ban’er. Chapter 6 introduces her in a single clause alongside her brother and then leaves her in the village: it is Ban’er who is carried to the great house, twice. She belongs to the half of the family that stays with the crops — the fresh melons and vegetables the Lius bring the Jia household are hers as much as anyone’s. The novel gives her nothing else.
In Xiang Li's Hands
She sits on the ground in a salmon robe under a black jacket, hair in two black loops, holding a small yellow chrysanthemum to her cheek. A woven basket of cut greens leans at her side. Xiang Li paints the produce her brother’s page has none of.
The Calligraphy
青儿 alone, given name and diminutive, with no father’s surname attached — a farm girl named the way the household would call across a yard.
