“One Afternoon's Voice”
Her Story
A singing-girl from the Brocade Fragrance Court, brought in to Feng Ziying’s drinking party in Chapter 28, where Baoyu, Xue Pan and the actor Jiang Yuhan are the other guests. Xue Pan is her patron and behaves as though she belongs to him. She plays the pipa and takes her turn in the drinking game the men invent, singing her verse among theirs. She has no life in the novel outside that one afternoon.
In Xiang Li's Hands
A broad smile — teeth showing, head tilted, a red bloom held up by her cheek and more of them in her hair. Crimson gown, jade bracelet, an enormous open robe of green, yellow and blue pooling across the paper. No pipa, no table, no men.

云儿, the personal name alone with its diminutive 儿, the way a customer would call for her; no surname is offered, and none is known.
