Her Story

On the day Daiyu arrives at the Rongguo house, Grandmother Jia looks at the one old nurse and one small maid the girl has brought with her, decides it is not enough, and gives her a second-rank maid of her own. That maid’s name is 鹦哥 (Chapter 3). Daiyu renames her 紫鹃, and under the new name she becomes the person who never leaves her — the one who tests Baoyu in Chapter 57, the one at the bed at the end. 鹦哥 is the name she arrived under.

In Xiang Li's Hands

The only sheet here given a full background: a peacock in display, the eyes of its tail filling the paper corner to corner, the girl asleep against its breast in pink with her eyes shut. The bird in her name is a parrot. She is given a peacock instead, and given rest.

The Calligraphy

鹦哥, top right — the name issued to her in the matriarch’s rooms rather than 紫鹃, the name she is known by for the rest of the book, so the sheet catalogues her at the moment of handover.
