“Ruled with a consort seventeen years his senior, and the secret police”
Traumatised by a childhood spent as a deposed heir, he barely spoke in public and left the government to Consort Wan, who had been his nurse, and to the eunuch establishment. The Western Depot, a secret-police organ answering to no court at all, dates from his reign.
The porcelain of the Chenghua mark, particularly the chicken cups, is the most sought-after in the world, which is an odd legacy for a reign like this.
Empress Wu was deposed after a month for having Consort Wan beaten; she shares a silk with Empress Wang, who survived by staying out of the way.
