“Won an empire on the battlefield and lost it to actors and tax collectors”
A Shatuo Turk general of extraordinary ability who destroyed the Later Liang and claimed the Tang succession. In power he handed the government to entertainers and eunuchs, let his own armies go unpaid, and was killed by a mutiny in his palace three years later.
He is the standard example in Chinese historiography of a man who could take a state and not hold one.
Empress Liu had been taken from a sacked village as a small child; when her father came to the palace gates to claim her, she had him driven off.
