Dream of the Red Chamber / Xing family 邢家

Xing Zhong

邢忠

“The Poor Relation”

His Story

Lady Xing’s brother and the father of Xing Xiuyan. In Chapter 49 he brings his wife and daughter to the capital, having no way to keep them in the country, and the family is taken in on his sister’s standing rather than his own. He has nothing, and she does little for them. Xiuyan is lodged in the Garden with the girls; it is her poverty, not his, that the novel goes on to describe.

In Xiang Li's Hands

An old man asleep sitting up — eyes shut, white moustache, head wrapped in blue cloth, the robe put down in broad wet grey strokes. Behind him a pale green riverbank with small boats. He is the only figure here given a landscape, and he is not looking at it.

The Calligraphy

邢忠 is the plain personal name, with no title and no kinship term — the page’s own way of placing a man who has neither.
