“The Friend Outside the Gate”
His Story
Son of the general Feng Tang, and one of the young men Baoyu and Xue Pan drink with. He turns up in Chapter 26 with a bruised face, blames a hunting trip in the hills, drops a remark about a great misfortune that turned out to be great luck, and refuses to explain it. In Chapter 28 he hosts the party where Baoyu, Xue Pan, Jiang Yuhan and the singer Yun’er take turns at the wine game. He surfaces again later, with news and with objects to sell, as the Jia fortunes fall.
In Xiang Li's Hands
Orange-red from shoulder to hem, a gold pin with a coral bead, a folding fan dropped at his feet — and held high in one hand a birdcage with a small yellow bird on the perch. She passes over the famous drinking party and paints instead the idleness that pays for it.
The Calligraphy
The full three-character name 冯紫英 is given plainly, the way a man of family from outside the household would be introduced into it.
