“The Road South”
His Story
Old head clerk of the Xue family pawnshop. In Chapter 48, after Xue Pan has been beaten by Liu Xianglian and cannot bear to be seen, he announces that he will go south and trade; Zhang Dehui, who is travelling home at the year’s end anyway, is the man produced to take him. Aunt Xue doubts her son and does not doubt the clerk, and that is what settles it. The novel gives him the errand and nothing more.
In Xiang Li's Hands
An old man stooped against a rock, white beard, blue-grey robe with a dark fur-edged collar, a long staff held against his chest with a fall of fine hairs streaming off the top. Orange shows at the lining. No shop, no ledger — she paints the traveller, not the clerk.
The Calligraphy
张德辉 at the right gives surname and full two-character given name, the complete formal name that the collection’s stewards and servants are almost never granted.
