Her Story
One of the named maids of Green Delights 怡红院 whom the rosters carry and the story never follows. The Cheng printed editions of 1791 and 1792 give her name as 绮霞 rather than 绮霰 — sunset cloud in place of sleet — and which reading is correct is still argued over. That textual quarrel is most of what survives of her. The novel names her; it does not give her a scene.
In Xiang Li's Hands
Green flowered robe, deep maroon sash running out into a long train. She carries a small tiered lacquer food-box in her left hand and lifts her right toward her mouth. The upper half of the paper is filled with pale grey-blue birds in flight, sketched and left uncoloured.
The Calligraphy
绮霰, upper right, the given name alone — and brushed in the disputed form, not the 绮霞 of the printed editions.
