Dream of the Red Chamber / Stewards and managers

潘又安

潘又安 潘又安——两口棺材。司棋的表哥,也是她的情人。

潘又安

“Two Coffins”

His Story

Siqi’s maternal cousin, and her lover. In Chapter 71 Yuanyang crosses the Garden at night and walks into the two of them behind a rockery; he runs from the household soon afterwards. In Chapter 74 the search of the Garden turns up his letter in Siqi’s box, signed 表弟潘又安, and Xifeng reads it aloud. He comes back with money, in the account reported in Chapter 92, to find her mother refusing him. Siqi throws herself at the wall. He buries her, buys two coffins instead of one, and cuts his own throat.

In Xiang Li's Hands

Young, in a black cap and a full blue-grey robe cut with heavy strokes, head turned up and away, mid-stride. One palm open at his chest, a string of small beads and a jewelled clasp spilling from it. Ink rock behind. She paints the love-token, not the flight.

The Calligraphy

潘又安 is set low at the left in full — surname and two-character given name, the same signature that the letter in Siqi’s box carried.
