About Krista Tippett’s Creative Portrait
Chinese watercolor on silk.
Painted by Xiang Li
72 x 36 inches
Li has not met Krista Tippett in person, yet she has learned a lot about her through her daughter Fei Wu. As a broadcaster and podcaster, Fei has learned so much from Krista since 2003, when she Krista for the first time on public radio.
Shortly after, Fei discovered Krista’s new program called On Being, which examines what it calls the “animating questions at the center of human life: What does it mean to be human, and how do we want to live?”
Krista worked double shifts and fought to share many voices on her show that the general public hadn’t heard of. The rest is history. On Being remains to be one of the most meaningful podcasts and websites filled with insights and poetry we desperately need.
Li named this painting 百鳥朝鳳 bǎi niǎo cháo fèng, which translates to “all birds looking up to the Phoenix”.
The Phoenix represents Krista in the background, and we are “all birds” who follow her and continued to be inspired by her.
