He came to the throne under a permanent cloud of rumour about how, and then governed harder than either the emperor before him or the one after: the land and head taxes merged, provincial surcharges brought into the open, the Grand Council created, and a secret-succession system devised so that no one would have to fight over the throne again.
He read memorials until two in the morning and annotated them in red at extraordinary length; a great deal of what we know about eighteenth-century China comes from those notes.
Empress Xiaojingxian, his wife of nearly forty years, died in 1731 and he was too ill to attend the funeral.
