Zhao Feiyan 趙飛燕
The Performer
You walk into a room and the room rearranges itself.
- Magnetic
- Graceful
- Canny about allies
A singing girl in a princess's household, she danced so lightly that the other servants called her Feiyan — the Flying Swallow — and the nickname outlived her real name. Emperor Cheng of Han watched her dance and took her into the palace, and in 16 BCE she was made empress.
You know the power of presence, and you know that allies matter: she brought her younger sister into the palace after her, because two are harder to displace than one. The famous stories — dancing on a courtier's palm, or on a crystal dish — come from an erotic novella written centuries after her death. The histories remember something rarer: a girl who rose from nothing to the top of an empire.
