Dugu Qieluo 独孤伽罗
The Partner
You want an equal — and you will hold them to their word.
- Loyal
- Uncompromising
- Politically sharp
At fourteen she made Yang Jian promise he would never father a child by another woman. He became Emperor Wen, founder of the Sui, and kept his word — the only emperor in Chinese history of whom that is true. When he took the throne in 581, she sent him word that he was riding a tiger and could not dismount.
You treat partnership as a working arrangement. She rode to the palace gates with him every morning, waited while he held court and sent in her views; the court called them the Two Sages, and together they reunified China after nearly three centuries of division. Her fierceness had a price: she campaigned to replace their heir with the son who seemed to share her values — who became Emperor Yang, and lost the dynasty.
