“A Double Handful of Coins”
Her Story
A junior maid at Green Delights. In Chapter 26 she comes running in to Xiaohong’s room having been sent over to Daiyu’s with tea, and arrived while money was being handed out: Daiyu scooped up a double handful and gave it to her. She asks Xiaohong to hold it for her, and the two of them sit and complain about the ranking that keeps girls like them at the bottom of the room. That is her part in the novel.
In Xiang Li's Hands
Almost no colour. The robe is broad wet black and grey ink over a pale yellow skirt, and only the bodice is pink, the sleeves orange. One hand is up behind her head holding a round orange fan; she is grinning. Bare paper all around her.
