“Dead at Eight or Nine”
His Story
He has one line. In Chapter 2, Leng Zixing runs through the Ningguo succession: Jia Daihua inherited the office and had two sons, 长名贾敷，至八九岁上便死了 — the elder was called Jia Fu, and at eight or nine he died. Nothing else. Because he died, his brother Jia Jing inherited; because Jia Jing inherited and then abandoned the house for alchemy, Jia Zhen was left to run Ningguo unchecked.
In Xiang Li's Hands
A small child sits on bare paper in a pale green robe, eyes shut, smiling, two grey kittens gathered against his chest under a gold longevity locket. One shoe is half off. She paints not the death but the age — the eight or nine years he was given.
The Calligraphy
贾敷, upper left, two characters at child’s height on an otherwise empty sheet, the personal name alone with no rank behind it because he never lived to hold one.
