Chris Voss spent twenty-four years at the FBI and was its lead international kidnapping negotiator. He now teaches negotiation through the Black Swan Group, and wrote Never Split the Difference with Tahl Raz.

What is in this painting
Xiang Li builds a portrait out of creatures. Each one is a claim about the person sitting among them.

1 The title
Two characters down the right edge: a commanding presence — literally the male wind.

White, and much too large. Its wings open behind his shoulders where a coat would be.

At the middle of the painting, doing nothing at all. The whole portrait is a picture of somebody not making a move.

Enormous, in the foreground, and completely blank.

One on each side of him, painted in the same gray water the empresses' silks use for a storm.
